What is Messy Church?
Messy Church is a creative, Christ-centered approach to reaching people who may not typically attend traditional church services. It’s part of the Fresh Expressions movement, which originated in the UK in 2004 and arrived in the U.S. in 2010. Designed for families, seekers, and those burned out on conventional worship, Messy Church offers a relaxed, welcoming space to explore faith together.
Think of it as Vacation Bible School for all ages—intergenerational, inclusive, and joyfully hands-on. Each gathering is built around five core values: Christ-centered, creativity, hospitality, celebration, and being for all ages. Sessions typically last 1.5 to 2 hours and include four key components: a warm welcome, creative activities, a celebration time, and a shared meal.
There’s music, crafts, skits, and food—all centered on the love of God in Jesus Christ. It’s church, but not as you know it. For some, it may be the only door they’ll walk through to encounter Jesus. And yes, it’s as fun as it sounds!
Resources like lesson plans, music, skits, and sample menus are available through Messy Church USA, making it easy to organize. St. Paul UMC already excels at hosting community events—this is simply another faith-filled opportunity to connect.
This year, we’ll host four Messy Church events as part of our outreach. Imagine the possibilities: imperfect people gathering to explore faith, share Christ’s love, and experience grace in the messiness of life.
The Apostle Paul wouldn’t hesitate. He’d say, “Go for it!” So, let’s get messy, St. Paul. Let’s meet people where they are and open new doors to Jesus. Is it worth the effort? Is it worth the mess? Absolutely.
